ASM - Air to Surface Missile

Air-to-surface (ship) missile. There are various types for strategic and tactical use. For strategic use, inertial guidance and terminal terrain matching guidance (TERCOM) are used, while for tactical use, command (a method of heading to a target by command signals by radio), radar homing, television guidance (homing), laser homing, etc. are used (→ Homing Guidance). The famous French-made Exocet missile sank the British destroyer Sheffield in the Falklands War. The American laser-guided Maverick missile was also used extensively to attack ground targets during the Gulf War. (→ AAM, SAM)
