Synthetic oil

Japanese: 合成石油 - ごうせいせきゆ
Synthetic oil
Also known as synthetic petroleum. A liquid hydrocarbon fuel similar to natural petroleum, obtained from materials other than petroleum crude oil. There are various manufacturing methods, such as hydrocracking of coal (Bergius process), Fischer synthesis, which is synthesized from carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and low-temperature carbonization of coal. It was invented in Germany, which suffered from a shortage of oil during World War I, and was carried out on a large scale until World War II. It was discontinued after the war because it was not economical, but research into synthetic petroleum from coal liquefaction was resumed after the oil crisis of the 1970s.
