When a metal plate is placed next to the filament of a light bulb and a voltage is applied between the two, current flows only when the metal plate is at a positive potential relative to the filament. Discovered by Edison in 1884, this phenomenon occurs because thermions emitted from the filament are attracted to a positive potential. In general, the phenomenon in which thermions are emitted from the surface of a metal heated to a high temperature is also known as the Edison effect.

電球のフィラメントのそばに金属板を置き，両者の間に電圧をかけると，金属板がフィラメントに対して正電位になるときだけ電流が流れる現象。1884年エジソンが発見。フィラメントから放出される熱電子が正電位に引き寄せられるため起こる。一般に，高温に熱せられた金属の表面より熱電子が放出される現象をエジソン効果ということもある。
