When a metal plate is placed next to the filament of a light bulb and a voltage is applied between the two, current flows only when the metal plate is at a positive potential relative to the filament. Discovered by Edison in 1884, this phenomenon occurs because thermions emitted from the filament are attracted to a positive potential. In general, the phenomenon in which thermions are emitted from the surface of a metal heated to a high temperature is also known as the Edison effect. → Related article Fleming Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
