Sons and Lovers

This is the third full-length novel by British author D. H. Lawrence, and one of his early masterpieces. Published in 1913. Set in the mining village of Bestwood in central England, it depicts the youth and sexual struggles of Paul Morel, a young man born there. Miner Walter Morel and town girl Gertrude Coppard have an impulsive marriage, but the next day she falls into disillusionment. Gertrude, who has become a mother, entrusts her unfulfilled love to her eldest son William, but when he dies of illness, she pours her love into her second son, Paul. Paul becomes his mother's "lover" in place of his brother, and suffers between his lover Miriam Leavers and his mother. At the same time, he seeks the sexual desire he cannot obtain from Miriam from married woman Clara Dawes. It all ends with the death of his mother, and Paul breaks off his relationships with his lovers and leaves his hometown village.

イギリスの作家D・H・ローレンスの長編第三作で、初期の代表作。1913年刊。中部イングランドの炭坑村ベストウッドを背景に、そこに生まれた青年ポール・モレルの青春と性の苦悩を描く。坑夫ウォルター・モレルと町からきた娘ガートルード・コッパードの衝動的結婚はその翌日から幻滅に落ちる。母となったガートルードは満たされぬ思いを長男ウィリアムに託すが、彼が病死すると、今度は次男のポールに愛情を注ぐ。兄にかわって母の「恋人」となったポールは、恋人ミリアム・リーバーズと母の板挟みになって苦しむ。同時に、ミリアムに求めて得られない性の欲求を人妻のクララ・ドーズに求める。いっさいは母の死によって終わり、ポールは恋人たちとも決別して、故郷の村をあとにする。
