A strait in central Indonesia between the islands of Borneo (Kalimantan) and Sulawesi (Celebes). It connects the Java Sea and the Celebes Sea. It is about 800 km long and 130-370 km wide. Although there are many islands, the water is deep enough that tankers of 500,000 tons can pass through it. Along with the Lombok Strait to the south, it is an important sea route connecting the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Oil fields are spread along the eastern coast of Kalimantan, Borneo, and the Attaka oil field (reserves of 250 million barrels) is located 150 km northeast of Balikpapan. The Wallace Line, the animal distribution boundary between East Asia and Australia, passes through it.
