Computer-assisted collaborative work

Representative examples include the analysis of cooperative work in airport ground staff by the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center group, led by Lucy Suchman, and the analysis of cooperative work for navigation in large ships and jet cockpits by Edwin Hutchins. These studies began as part of research into CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work), and aim to identify new artifacts that are actually useful or design guidelines for them by closely analyzing how artifacts are used in actual workplaces. This approach is being developed as the "cognition in situ" approach or "workplace analysis."
