...Population: 273,000 (1991), metropolitan area population: 426,000 (1991). The name is said to be a Portuguese corruption of Mangalpura, the old name used until the 14th century, and is locally called Kudala (meaning "the confluence of two rivers"). The town faces a lagoon that stretches from north to south behind the confluence of the Gurupur and Netravati rivers.
