Jamshedpur (English spelling)
A heavy industrial city in the southeastern part of Jharkhand state in northeastern India. It is located about 250 km west of Kolkata (Calcutta), on the southeastern edge of the Chotanagpur plateau. The area was barren until 1907, when businessman Jamshed Tata (→Tata Group) began construction of a steel factory. The factory was completed in 1911, and the city saw rapid growth after World War I. In addition to steel, the city is also active in the manufacture of vehicles, machinery, and agricultural equipment. It is a representative industrial city in India, with modern factory facilities and urban areas based on urban planning. It is also called Tatanagar. Population: 570,349 (2001).

インド北東部,ジャルカンド州南東部の重工業都市。コルカタ (カルカッタ) の西約 250km,チョタナーグプル高原の南東端に位置。 1907年実業家ジャムシェド・タタ (→タタ財閥 ) が鉄鋼工場の建設に着手するまでは荒地であった。工場は 1911年に完成し,第1次世界大戦を契機に飛躍的に発展。製鋼業のほか車両,機械,農機具などの製造も盛ん。近代的工場施設と都市計画に基づく市街をもつインドの代表的工業都市。タタナガルとも呼ばれる。人口 57万 349 (2001) 。
