...There is also considerable diversity, such as pieces that correspond to Sanskrit and Chinese, such as the Four Wisdom Sanskrit Hymns and the Four Wisdom Chinese Hymns, and pieces that have a three-stage structure, such as the One Hundred and Eight Hymns. Depending on the position in which they are placed, hymns are called retsu-hymns, gyo-do-hymns, seated hymns, etc., or front hymns, middle hymns, back hymns, etc. The first line of the hymn is recited by the role of the head hymn, after which all the performers join in, and at the end of the piece, a certain melody is played on the hachi (or yashiro and niyo)....
