Company town - Kigyojokamachi

Japanese: 企業城下町 - きぎょうじょうかまち

A city where the local economy has developed around a specific large company. A relationship of ordering and supply with a large number of subcontracting companies is formed, and residents are given employment opportunities with those companies. In addition to securing tax revenue for the local government, in some cases companies also take on some of the city's functions, such as hospitals and halls. Some representative companies and regions are Toyota Motor Corporation and Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, Mazda and the Hiroshima region, Nippon Steel Corporation and Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Hitachi, Ltd. and Hitachi City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and Ube Industries and Ube City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is easily influenced by the performance and industry of the company, and while it brings prosperity, the relocation, closure, or downsizing of factories can lead to the decline of the entire region. Company towns of steel and coal mining are typical examples.

特定大企業を中心に地域経済が発展した都市。多数の請負企業群との受発注関係がうまれ，住民はその企業への雇用機会が与えられる。また自治体への税収が確保されるだけでなく，病院やホールなど都市機能の一部を企業が担うケースもある。代表的な企業および地域として，トヨタ自動車と愛知県豊田市，マツダと広島地域，新日本製鐵と福岡県北九州市，日立製作所と茨城県日立市，宇部興産と山口県宇部市などが知られる。企業の業績や業種に影響されやすく，繁栄がもたらされる反面，工場等の移転・閉鎖・縮小が地域全体の衰退を招くこともあり，鉄鋼や炭坑の企業城下町はその典型といえる。
