Ghost ship

A supernatural spirit that is said to appear on the sea. It is also called a ghost ship, a ghost ship, a lost ship, a ship of the dead, or a good-good ship. If you go out to sea in the dark, a ship with lights on will come straight towards you from the front. It is said that it will disappear at the last moment of collision. If you think it is a ghost ship, do not shy away. It is also said that if you continue on, it will disappear. It is said that ghost ships are sailing ships that run against the wind, that you can hear calls from the darkness, that they will race against your ship, and if you lose, you will sink. This is a story that is told as an experience in coastal regions all over the country. A similar thing is the Shiki ghost. This is a phenomenon that occurs when you go out to sea at night and the sea glows dimly. It is now known that it is caused by plankton, but it is similar to the funayurei in that the anxious feelings at sea cause hallucinations and it is perceived as a strange phenomenon. Another yokai related to the Ubume is called Iso-onna, who is said to use a ladle to scoop seawater into boats and sink them. In any case, if you encounter a strange phenomenon at sea, it is said that it will go away if you scatter rice or ashes on it. The phenomenon in which a boat moves extremely slowly (dead water phenomenon) is also sometimes called a funayurei.

海上に出るといわれる妖怪(ようかい)。幽霊船、亡霊(もうれい)船、迷い船、亡者船、よいよい船などともいう。暗闇(くらやみ)のなかを船で沖へ出ると、前方から灯(あかり)をつけた船がまっすぐに向かってくる。あわや衝突という場面で消えてしまうという。船幽霊だと感じたら、よけてはいけない。そのまま突き進めば消えるものだともいう。幽霊船は帆船でも風に逆らって走るとか、暗闇のなかから掛け声が聞こえるとか、こちらの船と競走することがあり、これに負けるとこちらが沈没するなどという。全国の沿海地方で経験談として語られている話である。類似のものにシキ幽霊がある。これは、夜に沖へ出て、海中がボーッと光る現象である。現在ではプランクトンによるものだということが明らかになっているが、海上での不安な心情が幻覚をよび、怪異現象ととらえた点では船幽霊とも共通している。別に産女(うぶめ)系統の妖怪に磯女(いそおんな)というのがあり、柄杓(ひしゃく)で海水を船に汲(く)み入れて船を沈めるという。いずれにしても海上の怪異にあったら、米や灰をまくと退散するという。なお船足が著しく遅くなる現象（死水現象）を船幽霊ということもある。
