Dwarfing agent - Waikazai

A type of plant growth inhibitor. A growth inhibitor is a chemical used to suppress the vegetative growth of plants and prevent them from growing excessively. In some cases, substances such as maleic hydrazide (MH) that inhibit cell division at the growing point are used, but such physiological activity is only put to practical use in special cases, such as preventing the growth of axillary buds in tobacco cultivation.

Dwarfing agents are a type of inhibitor, and are chemical substances with physiological activity that suppress the elongation of cells newly produced by cell division without inhibiting cell division in plants.

Gibberellins, known as plant hormones, are synthesized endogenously within plants and promote cell elongation, causing plants to grow taller, but there is another hormone, ethylene, that exerts an antagonistic physiological effect within the body. Ethylene is produced from methionine in the body and exerts physiological effects such as inhibiting cell elongation.

Dwarfing agents that are artificially applied to plants are agents that exert an anti-gibberellin effect by affecting the physiological functions of plants in some way, such as by triggering the promotion of ethylene production.

The main dwarfing agents in practical use are as follows: Daminozide (B-Nine) is used to dwarf chrysanthemums and to prevent Kyoho grapes (growing too tall and causing poor fruit set). Chlormethicate (Cycocel, CCC) is absorbed through the roots and used to dwarf flowering trees such as poinsettias. It is also used to prevent wheat from lodging. Digelac sodium (Atrinal) utilizes its apical dominance inhibitory effect to suppress the growth of hedges and garden trees, reducing the number of times they need to be pruned, and to promote flowering in azaleas. Inabenfide (Seritard) is used to prevent rice from lodging, and paclobutra (Bonsai for flowers and flowering trees, Pounty to suppress the height of turfgrass, and Sumalex to prevent rice from lodging). Uniconazole ("Sumiseven") is used to dwarf flowers. There are other dwarfing agents such as "Three Tone." "Ethrel," which gradually releases ethylene when sprayed, is also sometimes used for dwarfing purposes.

植物の成長抑制剤の一種。植物の栄養成長を抑えて、むやみに大きくしないために使う薬剤を成長抑制剤という。MH（maleic hydrazide）など成長点における細胞分裂を阻害する物質を用いる場合もあるが、このような生理活性を実用化している場面は、タバコ栽培における腋芽(えきが)伸長の防止など特殊な場合だけである。

　矮化剤といわれるものは抑制剤の一種であるが、植物の細胞分裂を阻害せずに分裂で新生された細胞の伸長を抑制する生理活性をもつ化学物質である。

　植物ホルモンとして知られるジベレリン類は、植物体内で生合成（内生）され、細胞の伸長を促進する働きをするので草丈を徒長させるが、体内でこれに拮抗(きっこう)する生理作用を現すホルモンとしてエチレンがある。エチレンは体内のメチオニンから生成され、細胞の伸長を抑制するなどの生理作用を現す。

　矮化剤として人為的に植物へ施用するものは、植物の生理作用になんらかの影響を与えて、エチレンの生成を促進する引き金となるなどの抗ジベレリン作用を発揮する薬剤である。

　実用化されている主要な矮化剤は次のとおりである。ダミノジット（「Bナイン」）はキクの矮化、ブドウの巨峰（品種名）のつるぼけ（徒長して着果不良）防止などに使用する。クロルメチコート（「サイコセル」「CCC」）はポインセチアなど花木類の矮化などに根部から吸収させて使用する。ムギの倒伏防止にも使用される。ジゲラックナトリウム（「アトリナール」）は頂芽優性の抑制作用を応用し、生け垣や庭園樹の成長抑制による刈り込み回数の省略や、アザレアなどの着花促進に使用する。イナベンフィド（「セリタード」）は水稲の倒伏防止に、パクロブトラ（「ボンサイ」は花卉(かき)、花木用、「パウンティ」は西洋シバの草丈抑制用、「スマレックス」は水稲の倒伏防止用）に使用されている。ウニコナゾール（「スミセブン」）は花卉の矮化用に使用されている。そのほか「スリートーン」などの矮化剤がある。散布によりエチレンを徐々に発生する「エスレル」も矮化の目的に使われることがある。
