Corydalis

Japanese: エンゴサク
Corydalis
A general term for several perennial plants of the Papaveraceae family, derived from the Chinese name "Enkosaku". The Jirobo Corydalis angosaku grows in riverbank grasslands and mountainous areas from the Kanto region to Kyushu. The tubers are small and round, and several stems emerge from the top. They are about 10 cm tall. The basal leaves have thin stalks and are compound trifoliate 2-3 times. In spring, a small number of flowers bloom on the inflorescence at the top of the stem. The flowers are tubular, about 2 cm long, pale pink-purple, and bloom sideways. The closely related Corydalis angosaku grows in the mountains, and the tubers are slightly larger and have only one stem at the top, with the first leaf degenerating into a scale-like shape. They bear many flowers. The fruits are narrowly ovate. The tubers of the previous species are used for medicinal purposes. Corydalis angosaku is similar to Corydalis angosaku, but the flowers are bright blue-purple and the fruits are elongated and linear. They are distributed in Hokkaido and northern Honshu.
