Clare, John

Japanese: クレア(英語表記)Clare, John
Clare, John
Born 13 July 1793 at Helpston, Northamptonshire
[Died] May 20, 1864, Northampton. British poet. He called himself "the poor peasant poet of Northamptonshire." Born into a poor family and receiving little formal education, he showed a strong desire to read from an early age. In 1808, after reading J. Thomson's The Seasons, he decided to become a poet. In 1820, he published his first collection of poems, Poems Descriptive of Rural Life and Scenery. In the same year, he moved to London and became acquainted with many writers. Due to poverty, he became increasingly depressed, and in 1837 he was admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Epping Forest, and in 1841 he was transferred to a hospital in Northampton, where he spent 23 years until his death. His works include The Village Minstrel (1821), The Shepherd's Calendar (27), and The Rural Muse (35). A unique lyricism is found in pure nature poetry.
