His poetic realism, which aimed to unify idealism and naturalism, is still used today as a concept in literary history to describe the period leading up to naturalism in the late 19th century. Born in Eisfeld in Thuringia, he first studied music in Leipzig. He later turned to literature, and was inspired by Shakespeare to become a playwright, writing tragedies such as The Hereditary Forester (1853), but his real forte was novels. His most famous work is the psychological novel Between Heaven and Earth (1856), which depicts the conflict between two roofer brothers. …
