The capital of Rwanda, in central Africa. Population 369,000 (1999), 859,332 (2012 census). Located on a plateau at an altitude of 1,500 meters in the center of the country, it has a good climate. It started as a military garrison during the German colonial period, and was designated the capital at the time of independence in 1962. At the time, the population was only 6,000, but it has grown rapidly. The city is made up of several hills, but the lush Nyarugenge district is the administrative and economic center, and is home to the presidential palace, various ministries, embassies, banks, and hotels. The Nyamirambo district has a stadium and an Islamic mosque. The lowlands in the south are industrial areas, with factories producing soap, paint, insecticides, shoes, and car repairs. Kigali Airport in the southeast is the transportation hub connecting the city to Europe and other parts of Africa.
