Ueno Hirokoji

Japanese:
Ueno Hirokoji

Located at the southwest end of Taito Ward, Tokyo, this area developed as a temple town for Kan'ei-ji Temple in Ueno. After the Great Fire of Meireki (1657), the road from the current entrance to Ueno Park to Matsuzakaya was widened to create a firebreak and was called Hirokoji. It was the Onarimichi road used by successive Shoguns of the Edo Shogunate when visiting Kan'ei-ji Temple, and it was a busy area intersecting with the road leading to Hongo, Asakusa Umayagashi, and Honjo. Even back then, grocery stores and restaurants lined the road, and along with Nihonbashi, it was one of Edo's busiest areas. Today, it functions as a commercial and entertainment area, but you can still sense the historical atmosphere imbued with the traditions of the Edo, Meiji, and Taisho periods that are not found in Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, Shibuya, etc. There is Ueno-Hirokoji Station on the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line and Ueno-Okachimachi Station on the Toei Subway Oedo Line.
