1890‐1974 Modern Chinese scientist. Born in Shangyu, Zhejiang Province, he initially studied civil engineering, but in 1910 went to the United States to study agriculture at the University of Illinois and meteorology at Harvard University, returning to China in 1918. After teaching in Wuchang and Nanjing, he was invited to Academia Sinica in 1928, where he presided over the Meteorological Research Institute and established meteorological observation facilities throughout the country. In 1936 he became president of Zhejiang University, and worked hard to maintain and operate the university even during the war. As soon as the People's Republic was founded in October 1949, he went to Beijing and became vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, becoming one of the leading academic figures.
