A representative genus of the Favosites family of the Anthozoa class of the phylum Cnidaria and the subclass Tabular corals. Also known as honeycomb coral. Tubular individuals with dense tabular plates connect to each other to form mass-like colonies. The cross section of each individual is polygonal, giving the whole body a honeycomb shape. Individuals are less than a few millimeters in diameter, and there are many small holes in the body wall. It appeared in the late Ordovician period of the Palaeozoic era, flourished particularly in the Silurian and Devonian periods, and became extinct in the Permian period. 刺胞動物門花虫綱床板サンゴ亜綱ファボシテス科の代表属。ハチノス(蜂の巣)サンゴともいう。床板を密にもつ管状の個体と個体が連結して塊状の群体を形成する。各個体の断面が多角形で,全体として蜂の巣状を呈する。個体の直径は数mm以下で体壁には多数の小孔がある。古生代オルドビス紀後期に出現し,シルル紀,デボン紀に特に繁栄,ペルム紀に絶滅した。(→刺胞動物,床板サンゴ類,花虫類,無脊椎動物)
