A mountain stream-dwelling species of tree frog known for its beautiful voice (illustration). Commonly known as Kajika, the refreshing song of the male, which flows through mountain streams in early summer, has long been admired. Endemic to Japan, found in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, it inhabits relatively wide, clear mountain streams with many boulders. Males are 3.5-4.5cm long, while females are as large as 5.5-7cm. They have flattened heads with large protruding eyes, and well-developed suckers on each of their four toes. The breeding season varies by region, from May to June or July to August, and the male's beautiful call can be heard at dusk in early summer.

美声で知られる渓流性のアオガエル科の1種（イラスト）。一般にカジカの名で親しまれ，初夏の渓流をさわやかに流れる雄の歌声が，昔からめでられてきた。日本の固有種で，本州，四国，九州に分布し，山間の比較的川幅が広く転石の多い清流にすむ。体長は雄が3.5～4.5cm，雌は大きくて5.5～7cmほど。頭部は扁平で大きな眼が突出し，四肢の各指には吸盤が発達する。繁殖期は地方によってずれがあり，5～6月あるいは7～8月ごろで，初夏の夕暮れには雄の美しい鳴声が聞かれる。
