Queen Maud Land

Japanese: クイーン･モード･ランド（英語表記）Queen Maud Land

The area is located in the middle of Antarctica, between 20° west longitude and 45° east longitude. Named after the Empress of Norway's King Haakon VII, the UK respects the Norwegian name and calls it Dronning Maud Land. Norway claims the area as its territory. It is said that in 1820, the Russian FF Bellingshausen (also called FG von Bellingshausen) sighted the continent from offshore, but in the 1930s, Norwegian whalers worked to protect whaling rights and discover new landmasses, and named the entire area after the Norwegian royal family of the time.

南極大陸中，西経20゜から東経45゜の範囲。ノルウェー国王ホーコン7世の皇后の名により，イギリスではノルウェー名を尊重し，ドロンニン･モード･ランドDronning Maud Landという。ノルウェーが領土権を主張している。1820年にロシアのF.F.ベリンスガウゼン(F.G.vonベリングスハウゼンともいう)が沖合から大陸を望見したといわれているが，1930年代にノルウェーの捕鯨関係者が捕鯨権益の保護と新陸地の発見に従事し，この陸地一帯に当時のノルウェー皇族名をつけた。
