An indoor game played in the Edo period. Twelve Kan'ei Tsuho coins are wrapped in the shape of a butterfly, lined with gold or silver paper, and decorated with gold and silver mizuhiki (a string of silver that is tied to a silver thread). This is placed on a lacquer-painted pillow stand (a target stand). Players throw a 12-ribbed fan at the target, and the winner is determined by how the target falls and how open the fan is. The fan thrower sits upright at a throwing platform located four times the length of the fan (about 1m) away, and throws the fan with his right hand, holding the fan's tines forward. The shape in which the fan falls is given a name and a score based on the title of the 54th chapter of The Tale of Genji. Each player throws 12 times, and the ranking is determined by the total points. It is said that in 1773, Toraku Sannin invented the fan, inspired by the throwing jar (a type of throwing pot) that was introduced from China. It was widely practiced until the mid-Meiji period, but then fell out of fashion, and is now only practiced in a few areas, such as the entertainment districts of Gion in Kyoto.
