The Life of Dostoevsky - The Life of Dostoevsky

The Life of Dostoevsky - The Life of Dostoevsky
A full-length critical essay by Kobayashi Hideo. It was serialized in the January 1935 to March 1937 issues of Bungakukai and published by Sogensha in May 1939. It traces the turbulent life of Dostoevsky, including his exile to Siberia, his love affair with a married woman, his marriage and preoccupation with gambling, and his journalistic activities, and highlights the powerful imagination of Dostoevsky, who could be called a visionary, and the confrontation with modern Western thought that intellectuals in 19th century Imperial Russia had to face. It is a critical essay that poses a major question for the literary world in the late 1930s, shows the potential of criticism as literature, and marks a turning point in the history of Dostoevsky's reception in Japan.
