Caraboku - Caraboku

Japanese:
Caraboku - Caraboku

An evergreen shrub of the Taxaceae family. Most grow to 2-3 meters tall and 10 centimeters in diameter, but occasionally reach 8 meters tall and 30 centimeters in diameter. The trunk spreads horizontally and slopes upwards, with densely-divided twigs. The leaves are similar to those of the basic yew species, but are broad and thick, with sharp tips, dark green, and grow in a spiral pattern that is densely alternate. Dioecious. Small flowers bloom among the leaves of the twigs in March and April. Male flowers are small, elliptical inflorescences that are yellow, while female flowers are pale yellow and grow singly in the leaf axils. The arils become red and fleshy when mature, and contain a single brownish purple seed in the center. The ones in Daisen, Tottori Prefecture, are famous and have been designated as a national natural monument. Although it is a shade tree, it can grow in sunny places once it grows large. It has strong sprouting power and is considered a garden tree, suitable for both Japanese and Western-style gardens, and is widely planted. It is usually propagated by cuttings.
