In the direct method, a blood pressure monitor is connected to a catheter inserted directly into an artery, and the arterial blood pressure conducted through this catheter is measured. Mercury sphygmomanometers were once used for this purpose, but in recent years, with the development of the electronics industry, various types of electric sphygmomanometers have been invented and have become commonly used. Representative electric sphygmomanometers are the capacitance type and the strain gauge type. The former is an application of an electric circuit in which the deflection of a metal plate caused by pressure acts electrically as a capacitor, while the latter converts changes in pressure into strain on a string wire and records the resulting changes in electric current.
