Swift's scallop

Japanese: エゾギンチャクガイ - えぞぎんちゃくがい(英語表記)Swift's scallop
Swift's scallop

A bivalve mollusca of the family Pectiniidae in the class Bivalvia of the phylum Mollusca. It is found in the Tohoku region of Honshu northward, Hokkaido, Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands, and attaches to rocks below the intertidal zone with byssus threads. Its shell is 70 mm long, 80 mm high, and 25 mm wide, and is either purse-shaped or narrow fan-shaped. Both shells are inflated, with five thick radial ribs on the shell surface, and even finer scale-like ribs densely located on top of them. It is stepped and knotty in places in the growth resting zone. There are large ear-like protrusions in front and behind the apex of the shell, and a dent from which the byssus emerges below the anterior ear of the right shell. The inside is white, and the shell surface can vary in color from purple to red to white. The adductor muscle (adducal muscle) is particularly delicious, and it is harvested for food.
