Faenza (English spelling)
An industrial city in the province of Ravenna in the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy. It is located 49 km southeast of Bologna, overlooking the Lamone River, and occupies a key position on the Via Emilia. In ancient times, the city was called Faventia, and in the early 12th century it grew into an independent city. It is famous for the production of pottery introduced from the Spanish island of Mallorca. The name faience comes from the place name here. Its production began in the 12th century and reached its peak in the 15th and 16th centuries. Today, in addition to pottery, gold and copperwork, machinery, and textile industries are also carried out, and it is a distribution center for fruit and wine. It is home to the International Ceramics Museum. Population 53,577 (1991 estimate).
