...The numerous illustrations from ancient times and the present, especially folk, folklore, and primitive images and children's drawings, show the strong connection between abstractionism and the search for the fundamentals of art. Their activities as a group began in December 1911, when Kandinsky, whose work was rejected at the third exhibition of the Association of New Artists in Munich, left the association along with Marc, Quin, and Gabriele Münter (1877-1962), and held an exhibition at the same gallery, sponsored by the editorial department of Blaue Reiter. The second exhibition the following year also invited Picasso, Braque, Derain, Malevich, and Larionov.
