A city in the southern part of Fukuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the eastern Chikushi Plain, the alluvial fan of the midstream of the Yabe River, and the southern side of the Minou Mountains. Fukushima, the central city, has developed as a castle town since 1587. The Kyushu Expressway runs through the city. Small industries such as lumber, woodworking, bamboo crafts, Japanese paper, and Kurume Kasuri have been thriving since ancient times. The rural areas are rich in rice paddies, and in addition to the production of tea known as Yame tea, fruit trees, flowers, and vegetables are cultivated, dairy farming, and food processing is also carried out. Stone lanterns and seasonal items are specialties. In the Nagamine Hills in the north, there are the Iwatoyama Kofun and Noriba Kofun (both historic sites), and excavated items are exhibited at the Iwatoyama Historical Museum. In October 2006, Kamiyo Town in Yame County was incorporated, and in February 2010, Kurogi Town, Tachibana Town, Yabe Village, and Hoshino Village in Yame County were incorporated. 482.44km2 . 69,057 people (2010). 福岡県南部の市。1954年市制。筑紫平野東部,矢部川中流の扇状地から耳納(みのう)山地南面を占め,中心市街の福島は1587年以来城下町として発達してきた。九州自動車道が通じる。古くから製材,木工,竹細工,和紙,久留米絣(がすり)などの小工業が盛ん。農村部は水田が多く,八女茶の名で知られる茶の生産のほか,果樹・花卉(かき)・野菜の栽培,酪農,食品加工も行われる。石灯籠,節供用品などを特産。北部の長峰丘陵に岩戸山古墳,乗馬古墳(ともに史跡)などがあり,出土品を岩戸山歴史資料館に展示する。2006年10月,八女郡上陽町を,2010年2月八女郡黒木町,立花町,矢部村,星野村を編入。482.44km2。6万9057人(2010)。
