In the 7th century, Prince Nakano Oe, who was enthroned by Empress Kogyoku, defeated Soga no Iruka in the Daigokuden of this palace. In 645, Emperor Kokutoku abolished the palace and moved the capital to Naniwa, but in 655, Empress Kogyoku re-enthroned (Empress Saimei) and ascended to the throne in this palace.
