A Catholic church in Motoo-machi, Nagasaki City. The history of Urakami Christians is also a history of persecution. From the first persecution in 1790 (Kansei 2) to the fourth persecution in 1867 (Keio 3), the Christians experienced four persecutions. In the last persecution, all 3,394 Urakami villagers were sent to 20 feudal domains, mainly in western Japan, and 644 were martyred. In 1873 (Meiji 6), freedom of religion was granted, and 1,883 people returned to Urakami. In 1880, these believers purchased the former village headman's residence and used it as a temporary church. This residence was also a place of painful memories, as the fumie ceremony was held there until 1857 (Ansei 4). In 1895, construction of a Romanesque cathedral made of stone and bricks was started based on a design by Reverend Fureno, and the work was taken over by Reverend Lage, and thanks to the great efforts of the believers, it was completed 20 years later in 1914 (Taisho 3). It was completely destroyed by the atomic bomb on August 9, 1945, and in addition to the two priests, 8,500 of the 12,000 parishioners in the Urakami Church area died. It was rebuilt in 1959, and in 1981, Pope John Paul II made a historic visit to the church.
