1799‐1884 Hungarian revolutionary democrat. Born into serfdom, he worked as an agricultural laborer until the age of 20. He eventually became a weaver, and then graduated from high school and university to become a teacher and critic. During the revolution of 1848, he was one of the earliest voices in calling for the free emancipation of serfs. He was arrested and imprisoned after a literary scandal, but was released by the people in March 1848, and played an active role as a representative during the War of Independence. He was imprisoned after Germany's defeat, but released in 1857. He was rearrested in 1860 for organizing a demonstration, and was released after the Ausgleich (compromise) with Austria in 1867.
