Hungarian revolutionary democrat. Born into serfdom, he worked as an agricultural laborer until the age of 20. He eventually became a weaver, and then graduated from high school and university to become a teacher and critic. During the revolution of 1848, he was one of the earliest voices in calling for the free emancipation of serfs. He was arrested and imprisoned after a literary scandal, but was released by the people in March 1848, and played an active role as a representative during the War of Independence. He was imprisoned after Germany's defeat, but released in 1857. He was rearrested in 1860 for organizing a demonstration, and was released after the Ausgleich (compromise) with Austria in 1867.

ハンガリーの革命的民主主義者。農奴の出身で，20歳までは農業労働に従事。やがて織工となり，さらには高校，大学を出て教師，評論家となる。1848年革命期にいち早く農奴の無償解放を主張。筆禍に遭い逮捕･投獄されたが，48年3月に民衆により解放され，独立戦争中は代議士として活躍。敗戦後投獄されたが，57年に釈放。60年にデモを組織して再逮捕され，67年のオーストリアとのアウスグライヒ(妥協)後釈放された。
