A snail of the family Semisulcopodidae (illustration). It is found in rivers, lakes and marshes from southern Hokkaido to Taiwan and in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, but there is considerable regional variation. The shell is long and slender, about 3 cm high and 1.2 cm wide, but the local type of giant river snail found in Fukui Prefecture reaches 5 cm high and 2 cm wide. The top of the shell has been eroded and lost, and usually only the last 3 to 5 layers remain. This is because freshwater has little limestone. The surface is covered with yellow-green skin, and sometimes there are 1 to 3 black-brown colored bands on top of this. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
