Statue of the goddess Athena, the chief deity of the Parthenon. The original, completed by Phidias in 438 BC, has been lost, but her appearance can be reconstructed to some extent from several small Roman copies and ancient records. The goddess Athena stands upright facing forward, supporting a shield and spear in her left hand, and holding Nike, the goddess of victory, in her right palm. She wears a tassel of snakes and an aegis with a Gorgon's neck on her robe, and on her head she wears a helmet decorated with Pegasus and a sphinx. The front of the shield depicts gods fighting the giants, and the back depicts Greeks fighting the Amazons. On the inside of the shield, the snake of the Acropolis is coiled, and the birth of Pandora is depicted on the base. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
