Ejin (English spelling)

Japanese: エチナ（英語表記）Ejin

A banner (equivalent to a county) in the west of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China. Population 15,000 (1994). Located in an oasis area downstream of the Ecchina River (weak water), it has been a key route to the desert since ancient times. The area is a treasure trove of archaeology, with the remains of the Juyan County Fortress, a defense base against the Xiongnu since Emperor Wu of Han, and the remains of Khara-Khoto (Black City), a city that flourished during the Western Xia period (11th to 13th centuries). In particular, the so-called Juyan Han bamboo slips, which were discovered in 1930 at the site of the Han Dynasty and whose number increased after a re-examination in 1973, are valuable resources for research into the history of the Han Dynasty.

中国，内モンゴル自治区の西部の旗(県に相当)。人口1万5000(1994)。エチナ川(弱水)下流のオアシス地帯にあり，古来漠北に通じる要路にあたる。付近には漢の武帝以来の匈奴に対する防衛基地や居延県城の遺址があり，また西夏時代(11～13世紀)に栄えた都市，カラ･ホト(黒城)の跡もあり，考古学上の宝庫である。とくに1930年に漢代の遺址から約1万余点の簡牘（かんとく）が発見され，73年にも再調査されてその数を増加した，いわゆる居延漢簡は，漢代史研究の貴重な資料である。
