(Lucius Annaeus Seneca) Roman philosopher, playwright, and politician. He developed Stoic philosophy, distinguishing between the soul and the body, and arguing that the soul is the breath of God, the first cause of all things, and that no matter how unhappy the body is, the soul can live well and is immortal. He became Nero's private tutor, but later committed suicide on suspicion of treason. His main work is "Letters Morale." His tragedies, such as "Medea" and "Agamemnon," had a major influence on Renaissance literature.
