Topkapi Palace - Topkapi Palace (English spelling)

Topkapi Palace - Topkapi Palace (English spelling)

The palace is located on a hilltop at the eastern end of the old city of Istanbul, surrounded on three sides by the sea. In ancient times, it was the site of the Acropolis. Construction began in the late 15th century under Mehmed II of the Ottoman Empire, and successive sultans added and remodeled it into a vast palace with numerous buildings, but much of it was destroyed in a fire in 1863. The name Topkapi comes from the two giant cannons that stood in front of the main gate.

Currently open to the public as a museum, the treasury contains sumptuous furniture studded with countless large gemstones, jewelry, costumes, and manuscripts and miniatures of art historical value. The former kitchen displays many masterpieces of Chinese porcelain, as well as Arita ware and glassware. Of the surviving buildings, the Baghdad Kösikü in the gardens is the most magnificent. The Old City of Istanbul, where the palace is located, was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1985 (World Cultural Heritage).
