Photomontage - photo-montage (English: photo-montage French)

Montage is a photographic technique. The original meaning of the word montage is "to assemble" or "to fit together," and in film it means to create a new meaning by combining images through editing. In photography, it means the synthesis of two or more images, and can be created by multiple exposures on film or photographic paper, or by photographing and printing a photo collage of multiple fragmentary photographs pasted together. In 1915, German Dadaists John Heartfield (1891-1968) and Georg Grossz created this technique together, and Heartfield in particular used this technique to sharply satirize the Nazis in the early 1930s, which led to him being forced into exile. Moholy-Nagy of the Bauhaus gave the technique a photographic aesthetic meaning, and he himself applied it to his abstract expressionist works.

Although this technique fell into disuse after the Second World War, it is still widely used in advertising and promotion, and because of its ability to combine reality and virtuality, it is still used as a method of social satire, as seen in the works of Kimura Tsunehisa (1928-2008). In Japan, in 1971 (Showa 46), a satirical work by Mad Amano (1939- ) in which he montaged a photo of snow tires onto a skiing photograph by Shirakawa Yoshikazu (1935- ), led to a lawsuit over photo copyright, drawing social attention. In the 1990s, the spread of personal computers made it easier to synthesize photographic images into more realistic digital images, and photography is entering a new stage as an expressive technique.

写真による表現技巧の一つ。モンタージュの本来の語義は「組み立てる」「はめ込む」であり、映画用語としては編集によるイメージの複合から新たな意味を創出すること。写真においては二つ以上の複数画像の合成を意味し、フィルムや印画紙への多重露光で制作する場合と、複数の断片的な写真画像を貼(は)りあわせたフォトコラージュを、撮影し印画化したものなどがある。1915年、ドイツのダダイスト、ジョン・ハートフィールドJohn Heartfield（1891―1968）とゲオルグ・グロッスが共同制作し、とりわけハートフィールドは1930年代初期、この手法によってナチスを痛烈に風刺し、亡命を余儀なくされた。バウハウスのモホリ・ナギはこの技法の写真美学的な意味づけを行い、彼自身は抽象表現作品にこれを応用した。

　第二次世界大戦後この手法は衰えたが、広告や宣伝分野では広く使用され、また現実と仮想を組み合わせて表現できるという性格から、木村恒久(つねひさ)（1928―2008）の作品にみられるように、社会風刺的な手法として根強く使われている。日本では1971年（昭和46）マッド・アマノ（1939―　）が白川義員(よしかず)（1935―　）のスキー写真にスノータイヤの写真をモンタージュした風刺作品が、写真著作権をめぐっての裁判となり、社会的に注目された。1990年代になると、パーソナルコンピュータの普及で、写真画像が容易によりリアルデジタル合成できるようになり、写真における一つの表現技巧として新たな段階を迎えつつある。
