A city located in the center of the province of Cadiz in southern Spain. Population 175,653 (1981). Jerez is known for producing high-quality grape wine, and the name of the city is the origin of the word sherry. The Jerez plain is suitable for growing grapes, and grape wine has been produced there since Roman times. In the mid-17th century, Cabeza de Aranda established a bodega (wine storehouse) and commercialized grape wine production. From the second half of the 18th century, demand overseas increased rapidly, and Cadiz merchant González Ángel, together with the Swiss Pedro Domecq, the Frenchman Aury, and the Irishman Patrick Galvey, built the early days of the Jerez grape wine industry.
