A large-scale outdoor research facility that irradiates plants with gamma rays to study and utilize their effects. In Japan, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has a radiation breeding station in Hitachi-Omiya, Ibaraki Prefecture. Crops and forest trees are planted in a circular field with a radius of about 100 meters, and an irradiation tower containing cobalt-60 is placed in the center to constantly irradiate them with gamma rays. The station is used to study differences in radiation sensitivity due to species, varieties and growing seasons, the mechanism of radiation damage and how to prevent it, mutations and breeding improvements due to radiation, and changes in the field environment due to radiation exposure.
