Hendrick Goltzius

Japanese: ホルツィウス(英語表記)Hendrick Goltzius
Hendrick Goltzius
1558‐1618
Dutch printmaker, draughtsman and painter. Born near Venlo, he studied under DV Coornhert, a printmaker also known as a humanist thinker, before moving to Haarlem in 1577. In his early years he produced many copperplate prints and drawings heavily influenced by Spranger, and together with his friends van Mander and C. Cornelisz, he made Haarlem a major center of northern Mannerism. He was awakened by the art of Raphael during a trip to Italy in 1590-91, and after returning to Japan his works gradually took on a more classical tendency.
