Moeritherium

…The origin of the proboscideans dates back more than 60 million years to the Late Cretaceous and Paleocene primitive ungulates, the Ophiopods. However, the oldest known fossil is the Moeritherium , from the Late Eocene, 40 million years ago. The animal was first found as a fossil in the Fayum region of Egypt, and was named after Lake Meri, the ancient name of a lake in the area.
