This is a type of comic literature in which different things compete with each other for superiority, and is a debate between the two leading drinkers: alcohol (heavy drinkers) and tea (non-drinkers). An ancient work by the name of Chashu-on-shu (Discussion on Tea and Alcohol) is thought to date from the late Tang dynasty in China. In Japan, there are two works by the same name. One is Shushu-on-shu (Discussion on Alcohol and Tea), written in 1576 (Tensho 4) by the Zen monk Lanshu Genshu of Otsutsu Temple in Gifu, and is a work of over 2,000 characters in classical Chinese. The second is Shushu-on-shu (Discussion on Alcohol and Tea), a one-volume kana story (completed in the early 17th century) by an unknown author. In the former, a debate between Wangyou-kun, a heavy drinker, and Dangbo-shi, a non-drinker, cites a Chinese historical story, and at the end, a casual drinker appears and draws a line between them, saying, "Alcohol is alcohol, and tea is tea."
