A book written by German legal scholar Jhering. Revised and published (1891) for the general reader, it explains in a literary and powerful style what law means to human beings, based on the author's unique historical perspective. It begins with the famous words, "The goal of law is peace, and the means to achieve it is struggle," and goes on to say that protesting and fighting when one's rights are violated or oppressed by others is not simply a way to restore damages, but a way to restore one's personality. Furthermore, it goes on to say that the struggle for such rights contributes to the enactment of laws for the nation and society, and is therefore a duty of each individual to society. It is still widely read around the world as an excellent introduction to jurisprudence.
