European Coal and Steel Community: An economic cooperation organization established in 1952 by six countries: France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. Its purpose is to jointly manage the production, prices, and working conditions of coal and steel. It became the basis for the EEC, which was launched in 1958.
