A city in northern Denmark. It is located on the south shore of Limfjord, a waterway that connects the North Sea and Kattegat. Its population of 162,264 (2002) is the fourth largest in the country. Various industries, such as cement manufacturing and agricultural product exports, have developed, and together with Nordsøndby on the opposite shore, it forms an industrial zone. The name of the city, Alabu (a town in the deep water), is engraved on coins minted around 1040. It flourished as a trading center for herring and other products, and in 1342 it gained city autonomy, and in 1554 a bishop's seat was established. It was later devastated by civil wars and other events, but was rebuilt as a modern city at the end of the 19th century. There are notable old buildings such as Aalborg Castle (1539), Jens Bang's House (1623-24), and Jørn Olofsen's House (1616).
