Soon after the war began, a peace treaty was concluded with the consul Bestia, who came from a noble family, but this raised suspicions that Jugurtha had bribed the nobles, igniting the anti-noble sentiment of the Roman people that had been simmering since the suppression of the reforms of the Gracchi brothers, and led to the rise of the popular faction, who called for the clarification of the suspicions and the continuation of the war. Jugurtha was summoned to Rome as a witness, but returned home without being questioned, and the war resumed. He fought well against the Roman forces under Metellus Quintus Caecilius Metellus Numidicus and Marius, with the support of peasants and frontier nomads, but he was betrayed by his ally, the King of Mauretania, and handed over to Rome (105 BC) and executed. ...
