Imari [city] - Imari

Japanese: 伊万里[市] - いまり
Imari [city] - Imari
A city in western Saga Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The central town overlooking Imari Bay was the base of operations for the Wako pirates of the Middle Ages. During the Edo period, it flourished as a port for shipping Imari ware, and after the opening of the Chikuhi Line and Matsuura Railway, it became a key transportation hub and a mining town in the Sasebo coalfields. However, by 1970, all of the coal mines had closed. Fishing is thriving, producing kamaboko and chikuwa, and the Okawa area produces a lot of pears and mandarin oranges, as well as pear wine. Livestock is also raised. An industrial complex has been developed around Kubara, and shipbuilding, wood processing, electronics, and other industries are carried out here. Okawachi has long been the birthplace of Okawachi ware, including Iro Nabeshima. Area: 255.25 km2 . Population: 57,161 (2010).
