Abbreviation: RIFP (Research Institute for Fundamental Physics). Established in 1953 at Kyoto University to commemorate Hideki Yukawa's Nobel Prize in 1949, RIFP was the first joint research institute in Japan for researchers in related fields from all over Japan. In 1990, it absorbed the Institute of Theoretical Physics, Hiroshima University. It conducts theoretical research on particle physics, high energy physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, and condensed matter physics. It frequently holds workshops and is visited by many researchers from Japan and abroad, making it an important place for research exchange. It is particularly focused on nurturing interdisciplinary fields that have the potential for new developments. It hosted the International Conference on Theoretical Physics in 1953 and the International Conference on Elementary Particle Physics in 1965. It also holds the international academic conference "Yukawa International Seminar" every other year (initially every year). The first director was Hideki Yukawa.
