Abbreviation: RIFP (Research Institute for Fundamental Physics). Established in 1953 at Kyoto University to commemorate Hideki Yukawa's Nobel Prize in 1949, RIFP was the first joint research institute in Japan for researchers in related fields from all over Japan. In 1990, it absorbed the Institute of Theoretical Physics, Hiroshima University. It conducts theoretical research on particle physics, high energy physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, and condensed matter physics. It frequently holds workshops and is visited by many researchers from Japan and abroad, making it an important place for research exchange. It is particularly focused on nurturing interdisciplinary fields that have the potential for new developments. It hosted the International Conference on Theoretical Physics in 1953 and the International Conference on Elementary Particle Physics in 1965. It also holds the international academic conference "Yukawa International Seminar" every other year (initially every year). The first director was Hideki Yukawa.

略称 RIFP (Research Institute for Fundamental Physics) 。湯川秀樹のノーベル賞受賞 (1949) を記念して，日本で初めて全国の関連分野の研究者の共同利用研究所として，1953年に京都大学に設置された。 1990年には広島大学理論物理研究所を吸収合併した。素粒子論，高エネルギー物理，原子核物理，宇宙物理，物性論などの理論の研究を行なっている。しばしば研究会を開催するほか，国内・国外からの研究者の訪問も数多く，研究交流の重要な場となっている。新しい発展の芽をもった境界領域の育成には特に力を入れている。 53年国際理論物理学会議，65年素粒子国際会議を開催した。また隔年 (当初は毎年) に，国際学術会議『湯川国際セミナー』を開催している。初代所長は湯川秀樹である。
