A saprophytic plant of the Atractylaceae family. It is widely distributed in the temperate zones of Asia, Europe, and North America, and also grows in the shade of trees in mountainous areas throughout Japan. The stem is upright, about 20 cm tall, and pale yellowish brown in color. The leaves, which are the same color as the stem and have degenerated into scales, grow alternately. In May and June, a raceme is formed at the top of the stem, and several flowers hang downward. The flowers are also pale yellow, long bell-shaped, and have four fleshy petals. The Japanese name comes from the resemblance of the inflorescence to a shakujo (a Japanese staff).
